Charleston cruise port guide: Plan your trip to the Holy City

The Alley (4-minute walk) gets quite rowdy on weekends and during major sporting events. Folly Beach is less than 12 miles (about 21 minutes) from downtown. Its 6 miles of beach provide plenty of room for shelling, surfing or shark-tooth hunting. Or, take a guided kayak tour to Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve for a closer look at the historic Morris Island Lighthouse. Peruse local shops, or explore history at Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park. The Port of Charleston provides free parking for vehicles displaying a valid accessible parking placard or license plate with ID.

Things to do in Charleston before or after your cruise

But did you know you can also cruise from the Carolinas? The cruise port in Charleston, South Carolina, is a driveable distance from several cities, including Charlotte (three hours) and Raleigh (four hours) in North Carolina. Nestled in the heart of Charleston’s Upper King Historic District, this all-suite hotel offers upscale accommodations along with complimentary daily breakfast and free WiFi.

The fine printMust-know information for guests at this property

For a boutique hotel experience, book a stay at The Lindy Renaissance Charleston Hotel, available from 40,000 to 81,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. Additional parking is available at a nearby city garage onsite for valet parking with in and out access. Charleston's public bus service, Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, does not currently provide a convenient station or stop to the cruise port. Families will want to check out the South Carolina Aquarium (100 Aquarium Wharf), less than a mile from the cruise port (about a four-minute drive). The waterfront facility is home to more than 5,000 animals, including rehabilitating sea turtles in the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery facility. Two touch tanks hold sharks, horseshoe crabs, stingrays and sea stars. The aquarium also hosts daily dive shows and rotating exhibits. Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar (186 Concord St.), the place for fresh seafood and waterfront views, is right next door to the cruise port.

How much does it cost to stay at Hyatt House Charleston - Historic District?

A fitness center with cardio equipment and weights is open 24 hours per day. Luggage storage and a vending machine are available for guests' convenience. H Bar offers beer, wine, and cocktails as well as light fare. The College of Charleston is located just 0.6 mi away from this Hyatt.

Valet ($30 per day) is a wise choice if you’ll be coming and going frequently. Otherwise, park your car in the garage next door ($17 per day; $2 per hour). Hail a ride-share or pedicab for quick commutes, but plan to walk often as you’re within a longer stroll of the historic district and in the heart of Charleston’s thriving food-and-bev scene. One of the city's most popular attractions is the historic Charleston City Market (188 Meeting St.). The open-air spot showcases local artisans selling paintings, spices and crafts, including hand-woven sweetgrass baskets. If souvenirs or upscale items are on your list, spend some time along Charleston's iconic King Street.

A grab-and-go market stocked with grocery staples is open 24/7, and the bar sells sandwiches, soups, and salads. Take a quick dip or swim laps in the heated indoor pool. Skylights brighten the space while chaises provide ample seating.

I liked our room on the 9th floor, but it was expensive. AND, getting charged $38/day in Parking was insulting. Nice continental breakfast and coffee & water bottles were always available.

Boat travels from the bay up to the Carousel Hotel and back. Try something completely different and come sailing on our 50’ catamaran, Alyosha! We offer several trips each day, usually at 1pm, 4pm and sometimes a “Sunset Cruise” in the evening. Alyosha can take up to 12 people and has a men’s and women’s restroom for your use throughout the trip. These cruises are a nice 1-hour tour of the north end of the Assawoman bay. We depart from our Kiosk at 118th Street about 30 minutes before sunset (times change throughout the month, so check the schedule).

Sightseeing Boat Tours

While waiting for our turn Audra told us all about Parasailing, we thought about doing this all night. Well we got brave enough to go back and try it! Audra and the guys were very awesome and we are so happy we tried it! Staff from the Maryland Coastal Bays program will provide a guided tour of the Assawoman and Sinepuxent Bays.

OCEAN CITY 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS CRUISES

This was our 2nd visit to OCMD and the Sea Rocket boat tour. Both times was a great experience and we got to see dolphins both times. Crew was friendly and funny and they played a good variety of music. My 5 year old daughter loves the boat ride and it will be a return visit for us on future vacations.

Family Experiences

This 3 hour cruise will allow you to experience the pure joy of sailing fast on a 50’ catamaran! The incredible views, marine life on display, and fun captain and crew, will make this unforgettable. Come fish or cruise with us on the family friendly Judith M! We can pickup at most waterfront locations throughout the coastal bays.

SEA ROCKET SUNSET CRUISES

This is a chance to sail the Atlantic under moon light as the sailors have been doing for centuries! You will not believe how different of an experience this can be. While we cannot guarantee you’ll see wild ponies — our captains have had great success getting wonderful photos of the bands on the north end of Assateague. Trips depart prior to sunset from our Downtown, West Ocean City and 118th Street locations. Trips offered from 118th Street, downtown at Olde Town Marina and West Ocean City in the mornings. OceanCity.com is your source for vacation information and year round sights, sounds and news from Ocean City, Maryland.

Hour Fishing

This trip- which is our longest experience at 3 1/2 hours- is for those wanting more than just a ride in the Atlantic Ocean. You will leave with a deeper appreciation of the sport of sailing and the physics behind it. With the OC Bay Hopper you can get around OC without the headache of fighting traffic or scrambling to find parking. And, traveling on the Bay is a beautiful and relaxing experience. We found the Sea Rocket and went to check it out.

EXPERIENCES FOR:

Enjoy an evening on the ocean and watch the sun set on Ocean City from the water. These trips are typically shorter in duration (approx. 90 minutes) but still provide the thrill of sailing in a romantic setting. Longer, more intimate sunset cruises for up to 6 people are also available every evening from our West OC location. Trips offered twice a week in the mornings in peak season, on Mondays and Thursdays. These trips typically depart from Downtown and our West Ocean City location. Very fun and friendly staff that made our ride memorable.

Our trips from Ocean City originate from Mad Fish Bar & Grill in West Ocean City. Book Alyosha for your next event or group outing! Private charters for up to 12 people are available on request. Private charters are generally reserved by contacting us directly and may not be joined by others.

My mom, myself and my 4.5 yo took the dolphin tour and weren't disappointed! The ride was fun, good music, fun staff and we saw dolphins. The mate "skinny legs" was nice enough to take a WONDERFUL family photo on board at no additional charge. Definitely recommend the sea rocket and will be back in future visits.

Had a wonderful time parasailing with Searocket, Tony was a perfect guide. Discover Assateague on the Assateague Explorer boat tour or kayak tour from Chincoteague, Virginia. Wild pony tour, dolphin cruise and kayaking on your vacation. A leisurely cruise along the coast as the sun goes down with plenty of nature to see. We often spot beautiful water fowl and occasionally a pod of dolphins. See another side of Ocean City from the Atlantic Ocean.

We supply the captain, boat, gas, and even a cooler for your drinks and snacks. Join us for a hands on sailing adventure that will include some very basic lessons on the basics of sailing. Captain Steve Butz has over 35 years of sailing experience and recently completed a circumnavigation on Alyosha. He has logged over 40,000 nautical miles on the boat. Expect to participate in raising, lowering and adjusting the sails as Alyosha gracefully glides under wind power! No question is off limits as Steve is happy to pursue whatever topics interest sailors looking to boost their knowledge or stoke the interest of newbys to the sport.

Since this is an expensive option and adds to the total cost of your cruise, you’ll want to avoid Vancouver cruise parking downtown. The Vancouver Cruise Port welcomes approximately 1,000,000 passengers a year. While Canada closed its ports for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, 2022 saw a huge increase in passengers as the Alaska season reopened.

The natural harbor sits in Vancouver Harbour and opens into the Burrard Inlet. These coastal waters are home to many marine species, including killer whales, porpoises, dolphins, humpback, fin, blue and sei whales. Vancouver Port is the largest in Canada and the fourth largest in North America (2014 figures) in terms of tonnes of cargo. Managed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, it handles 147 million tonnes of cargo and 3.4 million TEU containers each year from 160 countries.

Port's 1 millionth cruise passenger mark was reached in 2002 (1, million). On May 20, 2017, the cruise port reported a record day with 3 ship calls (Emerald Princess, Star Princess, ms Nieuw Amsterdam) and a total of 15,800 cruise tourists. The record day resulted in hours-long waits at Canada Place terminal (for customs processing) and additional long waits for taxis. The taxicab problem was mainly due to the limited number of cab licenses issued in Vancouver City, as well as the local prohibition of ride-sharing services. The Canada Place cruise terminal is equipped with Shore Power on its east and west berths.

You will need an eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) if you are flying to Canada for your cruise. You can apply online if you are a resident of an eTA eligible country; the electronic travel permit costs CAN$7. You do not need an eTA if you are a US citizen or are arriving by road or sea. Every year there are over 250 departures involving some 30 different ships and over 800,000 passengers. The federal government has given the green light for cruise lines to return to Canadian waters starting in November.

The Vancouver cruise terminal is located right in the city, literally one step away from the very center of the city. If you’re driving to the cruise port, the parking garage offers long-term parking, catering to those on a cruise. Be prepared for sticker shock, as the lot charges CAD 32 a day or CAD 224 for 7 days. The Vancouver cruise terminal can accommodate up to four ships a day.

Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighborhood, is another of the city’s main shopping destinations, with a higher concentration of high-end retailers alongside stores selling antiques and First Nations art.

Ships of this height can only access the port at low tide when a First Narrows Traffic Control Zone operates. This means that no other ship can be in the narrows during the ship’s transit. While the federal government is lifting some restrictions in the fall, Alghabra says Canada is still currently advising that Canadians do not travel on cruise ships outside of the country. Alghabra acknowledged that the federal government previously said that cruise ships would not be allowed back into the country until 2022 while speaking at a news conference Thursday.

Ship types vary from large and mainstream to top-luxury and small expedition vessels. Inaugurated in 2009, Canada Place terminal's shore-to-ship power capabilities reduce significantly the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by visiting vessels. The new technology allows docked cruise ships to shut down completely their diesel engines and connect to BC Hydro’s electrical grid for all the needed onboard electrical power while berthed. Approx 40% of all cruise vessels visiting the port are shorepower enabled. As incentives for using shorepower, the port offers 50% reduction in harbour dues.

Shoppers can walk 10 minutes to the CF Pacific Centre indoor mall (701 W Georgia Street) or to boutiques in the historic Gastown neighborhood. For questions about boarding, disembarkation, and health and safety guidelines, please contact your travel agent or cruise line directly. If you’re looking for a cheaper cruise, sail in May or September/October when there are fewer people sailing. These cruises typically sail to Alaska, but you can also find cruises to the Hawaiian Islands, Mexico, and even Asia. The hotel has an outdoor pool, spa, and a gourmet restaurant with views of the city and harbour. This shore excursion is the best value for money as the 3.5 hours really packs it in.

Woodward Dream Cruise 2003: Mega gallery of muscle cars, off-roaders and more

woodward dream cruise 2023 cancelled

"Well, I had one like this in high school and once I was able to afford another one I looked it up, found it, and here I am. I found it about 5 years ago." (CBS DETROIT) -- The 27th annual Woodward Dream Cruise kicks off this weekend. We’re talking about new and old cars -- like the 1978 Buick Regal that Corey Townsend showed off.

Early cruisers line up on Woodward, share their car stories

The Woodward Dream Cruise is an alcohol-free, family-oriented event. As public safety is paramount, cruisers are asked to obey all rules of the road. The Woodward Dream Cruise is a spectacular experience to drive, or, merely watch and marvel from the sidelines. Public parking is available along or near the cruise route.

Sign up for the Morning Newsletter and receive up to date information.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is an annual automotive enthusiast event held in the northern suburbs of Detroit. Held each year on the third Saturday in August, the Cruise runs along Woodward Avenue, a major thoroughfare in the region, from Ferndale to Pontiac. It costs $40 to participate and the registration link can be found here. Participants can pre-register or sign up on the day of the race at the high school.

GALLERY: Start your engines! It's time for the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

There are no fees to cruise in the event or to watch. Anyone can participate although, those not driving a classic car are asked to stay out of the two right lanes nearest to the curb. Prior to the organizing of the Dream Cruise residents of the west side of Detroit and the western Detroit suburban communities had been cruising Woodward Avenue since the 1940s. The ad hoc cruising caused traffic jams on many summer evenings, automobile accidents and included many cruisers drinking and driving. With the organizing of the Dream Cruise most of these bad influences simply disappeared.

Visitors will be able to purchase food, and official Woodward Dream Cruise merchandise all day. Parking for this event can be found in one of six Birmingham parking structures; metered parking will also be  available. Nine Oakland County cities participate along a 16-mile radius of Woodward.

Over a million spectators are expected along Woodward Avenue this year. Here’s what you need to know before you go.

The annual Woodward Dream Cruise started in 1995 and now attracts cars and people from all over the globe. We're revving our engines, getting ready for the cruise. In addition to the photo galleries, videos, and news you'll find here, watch for live coverage Dream Cruise week on 7 Action News.

Dinner date! This gift card lets you dine at Planet Hollywood, Bertucci’s, and more, now starting at $20.

Car enthusiasts can enjoy some classic cars before the main event from noon to 7 p.m. Even though the Dream Cruise has not officially started, there is no shortage of classic cars to watch. Today is no exception as tailgaters are lined up along the route and everything from muscle cars to old-time classics have hit the street.

It’s going to be tough stopping a 30,000-vehicle strong mass from using a public street. The cities won’t be giving out parking permits or allowing folks to congregate. However, they also won’t be giving out tickets just for cruising either. "Collaborating with the Woodward Dream Cruise is very important to Ford Motor Company because we strive to contribute and give back in meaningful ways to the communities where we live, work... and cruise." We assume the police are going to stop that sort of activity, the assembling.

As we say below, we expect the traffic jam to be thick on Saturday, just like it always is. If you decide to get out of your car and patronize some of the local business, please do--that's one of their biggest complaints of the weekend--but please wear a mask. And look for me in a '63 Pontiac StarChief, or recently acquired 1989 Merecedes-Benz 560SEL. Out-of-town visitors are encouraged to stay at one of the hotel sponsors for the cruise.

These include Cambria, Hyatt Place, Holiday Inn Express, and Marriott. The event takes place on the third weekend of August. It originally began as a fundraiser for a soccer field in Ferndale. The inaugural event, hosted by Nelson House and other volunteers, brought in more than 250,000 people, 10 times the expected amount. Free SMART shuttle busses will run on Saturday from 9 a.m.

And there will be no roadside tents, no stages and no merchandise. But they can’t stop people from cruising legally on Saturday, Aug. 15, or any other day for that matter. Birmingham’s leaders voted no, 7-0; Huntington Woods voted no, 5-0; Ferndale voted no. Berkley is not planning to pass the resolution, according to the Detroit Free Press, but the city did say it won’t hold any in-person activities. Not a pandemic, nor a quarantine, nor a lockdown, nor cities NOT participating in street events will stop the Woodward Dream Cruise from happening Aug. 15 on Michigan’s most cruisable road.

"We have a car culture here. You can’t go to a movie theater, you can’t go bowling, you can’t go to a bar or restaurant, you can’t go to a baseball game,” he said. That means no Mustang Alley, no cruise-in concerts, no official car shows and no Roadkill Nights in Pontiac. There are numerous event sponsors for the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise, including presenting sponsor Ford Motor Co. Others include the American Automobile Association (AAA) and Wild Bill's Tobacco. The cruise runs along a 16-mile route through Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Pleasant Ridge and Pontiac in Oakland County. "I was born and raised on Woodward. I was born on 13 and Woodward. I lived down by the zoo growing up and I wouldn't be anywhere else on this day."

Pre-registration is closed but vehicles not pre-registered can enter at about 10 a.m. To 5 p.m., this car show will take place in the Walgreens lot at Woodward Ave.  and surrounding streets like Haynes to Adams Road, Worth Street to Woodward and Webster Street to Adams Road. Birmingham shops will be open, and there will be sponsor exhibits for spectators to enjoy. Birmingham held a virtual meeting about the event before the vote, including a public comment portion, where resident David Bloom said what most of us were thinking.

How Cruise Ships Work Part 3: The Bridge and the Engine Room

engine room on a cruise ship

Often, there are many comparatively smaller engines that make up the power demand for the ship; in port, only one engine may be online, but out at sea at full speed, they may all be online. On some smaller and midsize ships, such as National Geographic Explorer or Windstar's Star Breeze, Legend and Pride, the concept has not changed dramatically. The mechanics are the same; the main difference is how the power is created. Instead of steam making the pistons go up and down, the ignition of fuel now creates pressure and pushes the pistons up and down, turning the crankshaft connected to a propeller shaft.

What Engines Are Used in Larger Ships?

LNG is natural gas, which consists of 90% methane and 10% ethane. When cooled to -160 C, it passes from gas to liquid, and its volume decreases over 600 times, making it very efficient for distribution. Short-distance LNG transportation is via trucks or smaller vessels (also barges) fitted with high-pressure tanks. ABB Azipod propulsion systems have a major impact on the vessel's operating efficiency - reducing energy consumption and bad emissions by up to 20%.

All-electric passenger ships

The engines on a cruise ship can be up to 45 feet long, 27 feet high, and weigh up to 275 tons. Every piece of equipment can be monitored from the engine control room to ensure the cruise ship runs smoothly. Here’s everything you need to know about a cruise ship’s engine room. For a quick look behind the scenes, Royal Caribbean has peekaboo windows above the bridge on their Voyager-class ships. Many expedition ships have an "open bridge policy," which means you can go and see how the captain and officers control the vessel at almost any time (except when arriving into or departing from a port). Almost all passenger vessels have high voltage installations, mostly 6.6 kV or 11 kV.

engine room on a cruise ship

Equipment

Passengers will never see the magnitude of a cruise ship’s engine. Cruise ships require the heaviest weight to be placed at the lowest possible point. Since engines power ships through water, they can be quite large for mega ships. Output shafts are used to generate electrical power and are connected to the generators. Gas turbine engines create heat that transforms mechanical energy into electricity.

However, the steering and propulsion systems in Azipod arrangement, are combined into one part and the system consists of a propeller (driven by an electrical motor) turned by a rudder connected to the azipod system. The motor is inside the sealed pod and connected to the propeller. Generators power all the vital functions to run a ship, like emergency lights, communications, and navigation systems. If the generator fails, then there are also backup batteries that can be used for short periods of time. Regardless of the ship’s size and type of engine, engines are extremely loud.

Gas-turbine cruise ship power system

To achieve this reaction, compressed air fires into a combustion chamber. Hot exhaust is forced over a turbine, which spins to mechanically drive the shaft. Much like a hybrid car, hybrid ships rely on two different types of power systems. Hurtigruten's Roald Amundsen is perhaps the best known example; the ship has extensive battery packs that will have enough stored power to operate and sail the ship, even with the main diesel engines shut down. However, new technology and research is driving even greater efficiencies and more environmentally friendly ships. Almost 20 cruise ships will soon be in service powered by Liquified Natural Gas, or LNG; the first, AIDAnova, set sail in December 2018.

But really, the main reason to choose an inside cabin on the lower decks is that these are easily the cheapest room on a cruise ship. You’re going on a cruise for the experience, after all, not the nap time. So a cheap room that knocks 70% off the price of your holiday is well worth the sacrifice, in my opinion.

The cruise ship engine power is responsible for driving propellers, and the other possibility is producing electricity that is used subsequently to drive propellers. The engine's effectiveness depends not only on the design but also the ship's shape, weight, and size. Power is measured in horsepower traditionally - one horsepower equals 746 watts. The next photo shows the world's largest passenger ships' engine that powers each of the Royal Caribbean Oasis-class vessels.

Marine Engineering

Today, we will take an in-depth look at what lies beneath the surface of a cruise ship by exploring the hull. Not only will we explain what is down there, but we will also explain the critical function the hull serves. We will even address some common questions cruise ship passengers have about the hull.

The electricity is then used in the cabins, on deck and in the kitchens. The first company that fitted cruise vessels with gas turbines, was Royal Caribbean. Gas turbines are greener than diesel engines and allow ships to sail with reduced inventory and smaller maintenance crew. Gas turbines drive generators which in turn provide electricity to propeller motors. They recover heat from gas turbines' exhaust, which then is used to produce the electricity needed for onboard services (air conditioning, water heating). Since all of the equipment in the engine room is highly dependent on electricity, modern cruise ships also have back-up generators, usually located outside the main engine room, to protect them in case of fire.

The hull also needs to safeguard the ship and prevent it from sinking. As we will discuss in greater detail, within the hull itself, you will also find various compartments that can contain essential equipment needed to keep the ship functioning efficiently and safely. The hull of a cruise ship can be seen as the base and outer shell of the entire vessel. Essentially, it is the portion of the ship most submerged in the water. For this reason, the hull plays a critical role in keeping any cruise ship afloat. TUI published the company's environmental impact report (first of its kind) including environmental objectives and TUI strategy for a 5-years period.

It may cause coat hangers to rattle or other items in the cabin to shift, which may disturb your rest. The division of the engine room into separate compartments is for safety. Dividing the engine room into different containers makes it easier for the ship to contain the damage if there’s a fire or leak in the hull. The UN, NGO aid groups and others have raised questions about the need for the floating pier, since commercial seaports near Gaza have higher capacity and lower operating costs. The White House proposed the aid corridor as a second-best alternative to border crossings for aid truck traffic in and out of Gaza, which were used for final-mile delivery for existing NGO operations.
