The Ultimate Mothers Day Gifts for Design-Loving Moms, According to Kelly Wearstler

They’re such great touchpoints for inspiration in my own practice. My latest book Synchronicity includes recent residential and commercial projects, a perfect fit for the design lovers. Whether it’s getting her that special bag she’s been coveting, but would never buy herself, or a chic, yet practical gift that will make her life on-the-go a little easier, like my favorite travel pouch. Or maybe it’s something you can do together as a family, like a game, or an everyday accessory–like the ‘Sooo Easy’ hat–for the mom who does it all.

These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows. And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented. A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu. So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. Crypto.com Arena will host the basketball competition during the 2028 Summer Olympics.

I don’t think it’s damaging, I think it’s energizing. In the ’70s and ’80s hip hop was super niche and even when I was in high school in the ’90s people were saying this trend of hip hop would die. Now, I think Spotify just said that hip hop is the biggest demographic, bigger than pop music and country music. I think street culture is on its way to being that.

Now that I have it, and I have an incredible team, it all works out. Many people would say “Yo, why don't you just sign a longtime contract with Nike? That, to me, is the same tag on two different trains. Yes, I slightly get sick of telling the story or answering the question, but what supersedes that is the gratitude that, 15-plus years later, people are still asking me about this thing. That is an incredible honor to have created something that, decades later, people still want to talk to you about. There are parts of creating a brand like this that requires that level of…I like to mix the words tenacity and insanity.

But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry. The annual Grammy Awards ceremony has been held at Crypto.com Arena since 2000, with the exception of 2003, 2018, 2021 and 2022. As of 2023, the venue has hosted the Grammy Awards 20 times, hosting more than any other venue in the history of the Grammy Awards. I’ve always loved receiving design books for special occasions.

But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned. No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow.

The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gifts for Design-Loving Moms, According to Kelly Wearstler

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people. Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying. And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be.

And the landlord was like, “These guys are getting kicked out, so if you know of anyone who wants a space like this let me know.” And I was like, “I do, and I’ll live here illegally.” Classic New York story. I was packing my own orders, chasing people who weren’t paying, balancing my checkbook, counting up inventory, handing out little catalogs to stores, getting rejected. I think I learned everything firsthand the hard way. When I started silkscreening shirts I didn’t think it could be a career, that a person of colour, son of an immigrant family, could own a fashion brand in America, that was beyond comprehension for me. If I didn’t go into that shop and get that 12-shirt order, I’d probably be an accountant right now. The balance to a successful brand I imagine as a sliding scale.

That changes the way a culture develops, and it’s really hard for a culture to develop organically now without being scrutinized under the magnifying glass of social media now. Streetwear before, in New York City, was like 100 people, and there were like five stores in the world that supported streetwear. Now, Supreme being valued at a billion dollars and Virgil Abloh going to Louis Vuitton are hallmarks of how big this thing has gotten, but back then it was super small.

As an expression of gratitude, Mother’s Day is a moment for families to take the load off moms’ shoulders and cherish them for all they do for their families. It’s a day for quality family time, self care, and yes, gift giving. At the beginning of the brand it was important that I do everything from A to Z, and I quickly learned there’s only 24 hours in a day. So my biggest takeaway is that I wish I had taken on help earlier.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places. After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza.

Now I feel like it’s the start, because all these people who only ever bought Louis Vuitton or these luxury brands are seeing this culture for the first time. And now this will spawn, I guarantee, a litany of other high design/fashion collaborations claiming their streetwear connection. But what will happen on the other side of that, I predict, is you’re going to start seeing Costco, Zara, T.J.Maxx, and Marshalls doing stuff like that too. Pop culture “X” streetwear used to mean Nike, Cole Haan, whatever… Now it’s gonna mean that Home Depot could do a collab. And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there.

The venue is also frequently used for major concerts, and has been the most frequent host of the Grammy Awards ceremony since its opening. There's something for every single city dweller, no matter where you live or who you are in our exclusively curated designs. When you flock together as a pigeon, you are stronger, more vibrant, surviving the harshest environments.

Spectrum Internet Plans, Speeds and Availability

Bright House Networks owns 5.3% of SpectrumCo and will receive approximately $189 million. "When we acquire Bright House, we acquire the whole company," Dudley said. "The plan ensures that the company that is running today is running tomorrow. There's not a switch that gets flipped. We can leave them right in the Bright House infrastructure while we work behind the scenes." Google has invited cities in nine metro areas to work with the Google Fiber team and "see if Fiber is a good fit," while Centurylink is bringing it to Las Vegas and AT&T is rolling out gigabit Internet in Austin. For more cities with gigabit Internet, check out the slideshow above.

Charter to acquire Bright House Networks for $10.4 billion

Spectrum continues to update its local infrastructures across the US, but speeds may be slower in rural areas than speeds experienced in a nearby town. Spectrum uses the “up to” disclaimer because speeds are never consistent. Speeds fluctuate due to internet congestion, hardware issues in the neighborhood, and other factors, so you’ll never see the maximum speed all the time. You can self-install Spectrum Internet for $24.99, which includes service activation. Professional installation is also available at $59.99 for customers who don’t have fiber or cable already installed in their homes. Spectrum offers mostly cable internet and some fiber-to-the-premises internet.

Do I have to pay for cable TV to get internet?

Whether you're a fan of football, baseball, auto racing, tennis, soccer or bass fishing, it's always game time with Spectrum TV. Spectrum TV packages include offerings like NFL Network®, NFL RedZone®, MLB Network®, and ESPN GamePlan to get in the middle of the action. And depending on your level of fandom, you can customize your experience with national channels, regional channels, and seasonal subscriptions. For example, when we look at the gigabit plans, Spectrum can be cheaper than AT&T, Frontier, and Verizon, depending on where you live.

Sparklight—Economy Cable

Charter Communications acquired Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks in 2016. Charter Communications uses the Spectrum brand for its internet, phone, and TV services. WiFi costs $5.00 per month for Spectrum Internet and Spectrum Internet Ultra customers. Since the Charter deal was announced in May, "there has been a tremendous amount of work aligning the three companies into one," Durkin said.

Spectrum doesn’t bundle internet with TV for one low monthly price. Instead, you can pair one of its three internet plans with TV Select, TV Select Plus, or Mi Plan Latino (see channel lineup). Each internet plan and TV service has discounted pricing for the first 12 or 24 months.

How much does basic cable TV cost?

At first, 75+ channels in a basic cable package might seem pretty generous. You can get pretty much the same channels with an over-the-air (OTA) antenna and you’ll pay only once as opposed to monthly, which is just bad. If we don’t see why anyone would pay any amount monthly for Cox’s 75+ channels, imagine how shocked we are by Xfinity’s handful of channels. As with Cox above, we’re recommending the OTA antenna over this Xfinity package. Basic cable TV packages will include ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS, and other public-access local channels. Some expanded plans come with fancy cable channels—like Disney Channel, ESPN, MTV, or Fox News Channel—but they’re still stripped down compared to advertised cable packages.

Another assumption is that Time Warner Cable’s shareholders would choose option A. In option A, TWC shareholders, excluding Liberty Broadband and Liberty Interactive, get $100 as well as shares of the new company worth 0.54 shares of legacy Charter. In option B, TWC shareholders, excluding Liberty Broadband and Liberty Interactive, get $115 and shares of the new company worth 0.46 shares of legacy Charter. Customers on legacy plans from Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks must manually switch to a Spectrum Internet plan to discontinue the monthly gateway or modem lease. Spectrum Internet consists of cable networks previously used by Charter Cable, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks.

Just type in your zip code below, and we’ll hook you up with the TV folks in your area. Pursuant to the Agreement, New Charter and Advance/Newhouse will form the Partnership utilizing an existing subsidiary of Charter Communications Holding Company, LLC, a partnership subsidiary of Charter. Stay updated on the latest products and services anytime, anywhere. Plus, some regions have different maximum speeds due to the local infrastructure. For example, the Internet Gig plan supports upload speeds of up to 500Mbps in some areas but only 35Mbps in others.

For The National Journal's Technology Daily, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. After a move to New York City, I covered Wall Street trading tech at Incisive Media before switching gears to consumer tech and PCMag. As of the end of 2015, the combined entity would have had ~25.1 million customer relationships and ~48.4 million passings, per Charter Communications. Moreover, the combined footprint was present in nine out of the top 25 designated market areas. Charter Communications plans to increase product penetration levels for the combined entity, which should boost its unit revenue per household.

Luckily, most streaming services give you a free trial, so you can see which local channels you’ll get before you commit. But you can do better than basic cable—especially if you’re looking to save money. You can get all of the same channels with an over-the-air (OTA) antenna.

However, the services’ normal packages tend to have smaller channel lineups with the most popular cable channels and, in most cases, the local channels you seek from a basic cable package. Durkin said customers can visit spectrum.com for details of the Triple Play Select, Triple Play Silver and Triple Play Gold packages. The basic Select package starts at $29.99 a month each for cable TV, 60-megabit-per-second Internet service and unlimited nationwide calling, or $89.97 in full.

The merger of Charter Communications (CHTR), Time Warner Cable (TWC), and Bright House Networks was completed on May 18, 2016, according to Charter Communications. With this merger, the new Charter Communications is the second largest US cable player after Comcast (CMCSA). You can take steps to alleviate some of the interference, but you’ll never see the more consistent speeds of a wired connection when using WiFi. Spectrum TV Stream and TV Stream Latino are two other “lite” TV services that complement the Xumo Steam Box.

You don’t necessarily need the Xumo to stream any Spectrum TV service, as they can be viewed through the Spectrum TV app or a web browser. Run a quick speed test to see how fast your internet is, or download our free, easy-to-use app to test your speed anywhere on your phone.

It’s better to go with the antenna because you’ll get the same channels without a monthly payment. Basic channels are primarily locally broadcast channels like ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and Telemundo. Some providers even include higher-tier cable TV channels like Disney and MTV in their basic cable TV packages, but those channels aren’t the norm.

And if you choose a faster internet plan, you’ll pay only $20.00 or $40.00 more per month (for 500 Mbps or 1 Gig, respectively). If you live in Astound Broadband powered by RCN’s Boston, Chicago, D.C., Lehigh, or Philadelphia service areas, you can get Astound’s plan, which has 70+ channels for $28.70–$38.88 monthly. That’s a fantastic deal—but the deal in Astound’s New York service area is better (see next).

FAQ about Spectrum

The other channels are CBSN—24/7 news, CBS Sports HQ—around-the-clock sports analysis and live games, and ET Live—Entertainment Tonight on a loop. You’ll also get 31,000 hours of on-demand content from both Paramount+ (current and catalog content from CBS and other channels owned by Viacom) and SHOWTIME. Again, we don’t recommend basic cable TV plans—but you’ll find brief editorial opinions of each basic plans mentioned in this article. To read more about any of these providers, click the review link in the box. The companies also announced that they have entered into several agreements, providing for the sale of various products and services. Through these agreements, the cable companies, on the one hand, and Verizon Wireless, on the other, will become agents to sell one another's products and, over time, the cable companies will have the option of selling Verizon Wireless' service on a wholesale basis.

See other articles we’ve written about Spectrum Internet:

For only $28.37 monthly, gets you 70+ channels and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, which has four more live channels and 31,000 hours of on-demand movies and shows. The simplest way to get local channels is through an OTA TV antenna, which usually costs $20–$70. Traditional TV packages also come with local channels, and you can get a basic channel package for as low as $30–$70 per month.

Basic cable vs. streaming services

Two very glamorous older women — perfectly coiffed hair, gold jewelry, Jackie O sunglasses — sat across from us. There was ample seating throughout the airy space, including a nearly empty tented dining area in front of the entrance. We now live in a hybrid world, but the "power lunch" is due for a comeback. During 2023 discussions were ongoing toward agreeing a new media rights agreement to start in 2024 but by August 2023 an agreement, expected to be with Apple TV, had not been concluded. Following further talks between the schools, and in a drastic conference realignment, the universities of Oregon and Washington announced a move to the Big Ten, while the universities of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State announced a move to the Big 12.

Spectrum’s biggest competitors are AT&T, Verizon, and Frontier, which all provide fiber and DSL internet in areas that overlap Spectrum’s cable internet service areas. All three internet plans include one Spectrum Mobile line and Spectrum Advanced WiFi for one low price during the first 12 months. Most of its coverage lies within the Eastern and Central time zones and along the West Coast. Spectrum has some fiber-to-the-premises internet too, but only in new neighborhoods and rural areas, so availability is limited. You won’t know which internet type you can get until you speak with a Spectrum representative.

Best Spectrum Internet deals

We’ve set it up so that the information you get corresponds to the Xfinity region where you live. All these cable TV plans and streaming alternatives come with monthly payments. If you want to keep things simple—local channel access for a one-time fee—over-the-air (OTA) TV is the way to go. If you also need high-speed internet service, you can combine Local TV with Verizon’s 300 Mbps internet plan ($49.99 monthly) for a nice little bundle costing $118.99 a month. And if you’re already a Verizon Mobile customer, the internet plan is only $24.99, dropping the bundle price to $94.00 monthly.

Not only that, but streaming services are a reasonably cheap alternative to basic cable, with more live cable channels and loads of on-demand content. In addition, the network entered into extended negotiations with satellite providers. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott stated in a May 8, 2012 interview with sports radio station KJR in Seattle that he is "quietly optimistic" that deals with providers would be made in time for the channel's planned fall 2012 launch.

bright house networks

And, again, you pay for an over-the-air (OTA) TV antenna only once—and basic cable as a monthly payment. Choose Spectrum’s cable internet if you don’t have access to fiber and want faster speeds than DSL. Spectrum streamlines your choices and throws in a rent-free modem, gateway, or SONU to boot. Spectrum also offers fiber-to-the-home service, but it’s only available in new neighborhoods other fiber providers haven’t claimed (like AT&T). However, for now, Spectrum’s Gig fiber plan is 500Mbps or 1,000Mbps in upload speed, depending on where you live. If you don’t happen to live in those areas, Astound Broadband’s New York service area has the best basic cable package.

The other tiers escalate in premium networks offered and in price, and there are lower prices for unbundled services. Cable TV providers would rather sell you on their starter packages—a step up from basic. Starter plans usually cost around $60 per month, and they have a ton more channels than basic cable plans. Like we said before, you’ll get different channels based on where you live and the cable company you choose.

"Residents of UltraFi communities will enjoy unparalleled technology services in 2014 and well beyond." In planning these communities, Singleton said MDG viewed technology as an amenity, but struggled to find providers that were rolling out fiber. So, MDG put out a request for proposals and considered services like Verizon FiOS and Gigabit Squared before ultimately selecting Bright House. Other major deals announced include the more than $80 billion merger of Kraft and Heinz, AbbVie’s acquisition of Pharmacyclics, and Valeant’s agreed takeover of Salix Pharmaceuticals. The brisk activity advances a boom in mergers and acquisitions that began last year, as companies dusted off old consolidation plans, the stock markets surged and debt remained cheap.

The cheapest basic cable package belongs to Xfinity, which usually costs $20–$25 per month depending on your location. However, you’d be better off buying a cheap OTA antenna and skipping the monthly fees. Xfinity basic cable plans include the following local broadcast affiliates like ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX as well as local government channels and educational channels like PBS. Most live TV streaming services offer local channels, but not in all areas.

We recommend installing your decal in an environment with a temperature above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Car decals and vehicle wraps are both used for vehicle advertising and customization, but they have some key differences. Car decals are smaller graphic elements that are typically applied to specific areas of the car like the windows, doors, or bumper. On the other hand, vehicle wraps cover a larger portion of the vehicle, often the entire surface. Die-cut means that we are cutting through both the vinyl decal material and the paper backing.

The Fall of the House of Usher TV Mini Series 2023

the fall of the house of usher episodes

Roderick wants him to enhance it, but as Arthur points out, that’s really only a thing on television. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets.

Plus, Madeline and Roderick claimed they walked there but Arthur says the address is more than five miles away from the Fortunato office. He also looked into all of the bars in the five-minute radius of the office and none of the bartender descriptions have matched up with Verna’s. Frederick and Lenore also watch the news and Frederick tells his daughter that he’s not surprised Victorine died, saying the siblings who are gone weren’t full Ushers anyway. While Roderick wants to go speak with the board, Madeline says they need to prioritize finding the mysterious woman. Meanwhile, Roderick doesn’t give Juno any update and she wonders where he is when he doesn’t come home. She continues to call him while watching the news, where she finds out about Victorine and Alessandra’s deaths.

Cast & Crew

If you’re wondering what this lengthy, morbid backstory has to do with Roderick’s six dead children, you have something in common with Dupin, who arrived looking for concrete answers, not a weird trauma dump. Of course, there’s a reason it’s sometimes a good idea to go straight to a professional. On a dark and stormy night, Roderick and Madeline look at the fresh grave and see it’s now empty.

Camille comes face-to-face with Verna for the first time that night as she sneaks in to take pictures and expose Victorine for what she’s been doing. At Napoleon’s place, he wakes up in the aftermath of an intense drug coma and discovers that someone (probably him) has brutally stabbed and killed Julius’s cat, Pluto. He asks Julius if he did anything weird the night before, because he doesn’t remember anything. Julius says no, but he is worried because he hasn’t seen Pluto in a while and fears she got out into the night. Madeline tells Roderick that it’s beneficial to them for Roderick to stay there, to get beside Griswold and later stab him in the back. Annabel overhears Madeline’s disturbing speech to Roderick and later tells him she really does not like his sister.

No one should expect to make money from the picks and predictions discussed on this website. But as they continue to hear noise from the basement, Auguste isn’t certain that Madeline is actually dead. Roderick confesses that the biggest lie he’s told is that Fortunato could cure people of pain. But before their conversation continues, Madeline runs up from the basement covered in blood with the sapphire eyes in her eye sockets.

She’s so devoutly religious that she rejects medical treatment altogether, believing that interfering with a body’s natural state is an insult to God. It’s for that same reason that, after she dies, Roderick and Madeline bury her in the backyard, hoping to honor her beliefs by skipping the embalming. The Fall of the House of Usher: Episode One Recap.

Longfellow is the kind of guy who, knowing that Roderick and Madeline are his children by blood, orders Eliza never to bring them onto his property. Auguste goes to visit Roderick’s grave and places his recorder on the ground in front of him, saying he doesn’t want his confession. A raven begins squawking nearby and Verna’s voice begins to narrate “Spirits of the Dead.” She watches Auguste leave the cemetery and places objects on each of the Usher family member’s tombstones. We cut back to that New Year’s Eve party where Roderick and Madeline celebrated 1980. In the flashback, they start at the Fortunato holiday costume party that night, which is hosted at the office.

It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. Live burial and people rising from their graves is a theme in Poe's short stories. In the first, the narrator has a phobia of being buried alive (taphophobia) but recounts the tale of a woman who endures exactly that, then is resurrected. In the second, a man watches his wife deteriorate and die before ultimately finding no trace of her in her tomb. Both share parallels with Roderick and Madeline's mother, Eliza (Annabeth Gish), who climbs out of her fresh grave for a final act of vengeance.

His version of The Tell-Tale Heart is a modern gem, and “The Gold-Bug” is reimagined as a new brand for the Usher company. But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice. Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. As the series opens, fans are introduced to Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), the graying CEO of Fortunado Industries — a massive pharmaceutical conglomerate with a signature drug that’s equivalent to the highly addictive opioid OxyContin. Though he has everything at his fingertips, Roderick is deeply distressed.

In 1956, NBC Matinee Theater on US television broadcast The Fall of the House of Usher starring Marshall Thompson and Tom Tryon for episode 197. La Chute de la maison Usher is a 1928 silent French horror film directed by Jean Epstein starring Marguerite Gance, Jean Debucourt, and Charles Lamy. Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher.

This episode also gives us some more background on Roderick’s new wife Juno. During a scene with Lenore, she tells Roderick’s granddaughter how she got into a really bad accident that resulted in her losing one of her legs and other extensive injuries. It’s the start of everything and there have been countless rumors regarding it. For now, Roderick just lets Auguste know that he will tell him everything, but he assures Auguste that starting at the beginning is a necessity as every part of his story is important to understanding the whole picture.

Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion. He witnesses Madeline's reemergence and the subsequent, simultaneous death of the twins. The narrator is the only character to escape the House of Usher, which he views as it cracks and sinks into the mountain lake.

Auguste continues to be disturbed by the noises in the basement in the present-day timeline, telling Roderick he wants to go see if it’s actually Madeline down there. But Roderick pulls him back in by telling him that if he stays, he’ll have him for murder. The grandfather clock in the room begins ticking and Roderick says he suspects it’s Frederick, making sure his dad is getting the story straight. Over at his house, Frederick continues to do drugs in front of Morrie and terrorizes her in her hospital bed. He talks about the first day they met and asks her where she put her wedding ring.

Like some of Flanagan’s previous work — Hill House is based on a Shirley Jackson novel and Bly Manor a story by Henry James — House of Usher is the kind of adaption that uses the source material as a skeleton to build something entirely new upon. What follows is Roderick explaining the story of how all of his adult children died in a short span of time and how it all relates to him and a deal he made with a mysterious woman (Carla Gugino) at a bar in 1980. Roderick became hugely successful thanks to the help of some kind of dark entity, and now, years later, he (and his family) is paying the price in very bloody fashion.

It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character. “There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added. As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with.

Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. Because of this, it starts out slowly as the show attempts to introduce all of its various parts.

In film and television

A second silent film version, also released in 1928, was directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber. Roderick and Madeline are twins and the two share an incommunicable connection that critics conclude may be either incestuous or metaphysical,[7] as two individuals in an extra-sensory relationship embodying a single entity. To that end, Roderick's deteriorating condition speeds his own torment and eventual death.

Popular reviews

The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. In 1979, Italian state channel RAI loosely adapted the short story, together with other Poe's works, in the series I racconti fantastici di Edgar Allan Poe.[33] It was directed by Daniele D'Anza, with Roderick Usher played by Philippe Leroy; music was composed by pop band Pooh. The narrator and Roderick place her in a tomb despite her flushed, lively appearance. In the tale's conclusion, Madeline escapes from the tomb and returns to Roderick, scaring him to death. Fearing that her body will be exhumed for medical study, Roderick insists that she be entombed for two weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being permanently buried.

The eight-episode series, which premieres to the streamer on Thursday, October 12, follows the bleak, gory, and darkly comedic downfall of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his richly diverse (and richly despicable) family. Once that initial confusion is out of the way, part of what makes it work is how each episode manages to tell its own self-contained story about the victim in question while also steadily advancing the overarching tale of what Roderick did to deserve this fate. The mystery, which seems so obvious early on, becomes more complicated and even darker than I first imagined.

Flanagan’s latest Netflix series returns to horror-tinged family drama, but with a larger scope.

Gunning’s breakout role could also boost the chances of her co-star Nava Mau, who plays the love interest Teri, garnering attention for her performance. In 2002, Ken Russell produced a horror comedy version titles The Fall of the Louse of Usher. In 1989, The House of Usher was a film produced by American, British, and Canadian companies starring Oliver Reed. In the Roger Corman film from 1960, released in the United States as House of Usher, Vincent Price starred as Roderick Usher, Myrna Fahey as Madeline and Mark Damon as Philip Winthrop, Madeline's fiancé. The film was Corman's first in a series of eight films inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

While you can mostly see where things are headed in a broad sense, House of Usher excels at the details, from the thematically fitting way that characters are killed to the truth behind Roderick’s deadly deal. Even something as seemingly simple as an ignored text message becomes a powerfully tragic moment, full of both terror and heartbreak.

How does it compare to Mike Flanagan’s other Netflix shows?

In 1956, NBC Matinee Theater on US television broadcast The Fall of the House of Usher starring Marshall Thompson and Tom Tryon for episode 197. In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion.

The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama television miniseries created by Mike Flanagan. All eight episodes were released on Netflix on October 12, 2023, each directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, with the latter also acting as cinematographer for the entire series. But things start to get out of control after receiving a visit from his girlfriend, who will do everything to... Read allRoderick Usher returns to his family home after learning that his father is ill.

He witnesses Madeline's reemergence and the subsequent, simultaneous death of the twins. The narrator is the only character to escape the House of Usher, which he views as it cracks and sinks into the mountain lake. As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house.

When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed.

A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state. Throwing the windows open to the storm, Roderick points out that the lake surrounding the house seems to glow in the dark, just as Roderick depicted in his paintings, but there is no lightning or other explainable source of the glow. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it.

That combination, of course, is exactly what Flanagan is known for, and it remains strong in House of Usher... During a heated argument with Roderick, Madeline suddenly falls into catalepsy, a condition in which its sufferers appear dead. Roderick knows that she is still alive, but convinces Winthrop that she is dead and rushes to have her entombed in the family crypt beneath the house. As Philip is preparing to leave following the entombment, the butler, Bristol (Harry Ellerbe), lets slip that Madeline suffered from catalepsy.

These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way. What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks.

English majors will likely know where some of the stories are going just by seeing the episode names. When the young and trendy Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) decides to host an exclusive sex-and-drugs party at one of dad’s old factories in an abbey, readers of The Masque of the Red Death will know it’s going to be a gruesome scene. However, Flanagan is smart enough to shift the Poe narratives ever so slightly for a modern audience. His version of The Tell-Tale Heart is a modern gem, and “The Gold-Bug” is reimagined as a new brand for the Usher company.
